I have chosen a different life, a happy and healthy life. What about you?

This salad is one of my absolute favourites and I eat it almost every week together with a slice of home-made multigrain bread. I love the combination of avocado and celery in the dressing which can also be used as a dip. If you don’t have kailan, spinach or kale can be used as alternative.

Ingredients

For the salad:
1 bunch kailan (alternatively: kale or spinach)
1 red capsicum, chopped
1 tomato, chopped
1 C alfalfa sprouts (or others)
½ C black olives, pitted
1 t salt
For the dressing:
1 medium avocado
1 stalk celery
2 T olive oil
1 T lime juice

Preparation

Massage kailan with salt until moist. Add other ingredients.
Blend the avocado with celery, olive oil and lime juice until creamy. Pour over salad and mix in.
Add the dressing to the salad and mix well.

My friends from Samahita Yoga Thailand

How many people are afraid of financial consequences of losing a job, of getting sick or to face any other financial crisis? And how many decisions and bad compromises, e.g. staying in a job which is unsatisfying, underpaid or including too much overtime work, etc., are made based on this fear ? This article will describe how I gained a position of strength to face whatever might come.

When I started to think about creating the financial background for my new life, I was fortunate enough to read a book from Bodo Schaefer (see Reading and Reference List) which helped me to organize my finances and to invest my savings skilfully to set the foundation for my intended lifestyle change. Objective was not to become rich, but to eliminate financial worries so that I could and can focus on my life and what I want to do with my life. The concept is a very simple and easy to understand and implement and I’d like to share the basics in the following.

Imagine you will lose your job or you get seriously sick. How many months will it take to recover or to find a new interesting, fulfilling job? Being financially protected means, that you have enough money to do your necessary payments until you have a sufficient income again. How much easier life could be if you’d have a financial buffer to survive a period without sufficient income! Hence the first objective of saving for a better life is to create this financial buffer, to achieve financial protection.

In order to calculate how much I need per month as financial buffer, I wrote down my monthly expenses, e.g. for rent, insurances, phone/internet, grocery, logistics/car, basic entertainment, etc. I limited it to the absolutely necessary and kept the things ‘nice to have’, e.g. cloth, holidays, etc., out for better times. Remember, my aim was to be protected for that period without income, not to live in indulgence. Then I multiplied the sum with the length of the desired period of protection. The resulting figure was considered as the absolute minimum for my financial protection.

You can do the same. I think, everybody owes this to himself, his health, his inner peace, and the people depending on him. Nobody knows what can happen in future, and Murphy’s Law: ‘Many things that can go wrong, will go wrong’, is well known. But everybody can take actions to be prepared. Then there is no need to except bad compromises due to a financial crisis. Financial protection is a position of strength.

After I had calculated the needed amount, I had a target. Then, how long does it take till financial protection is achieved and how to save the needed money?

Well, the first depends how much money can be put aside every month. The little the longer it will take, and maybe motivation will decrease if you need 10 or more years. Better to save more, even it’s a bit harder, and after two or three years the target is achieved!

To increase the money being saved is it better to earn more or to spend less? Best is a combination of both, but of course it depends on your situation.

For saving enough money by reducing my expenses, I used to use a method called ‘budgeting’. I wrote down in detail what I earned and what I spent and could see how much money I can put aside. If this was not enough being saved, the second step started: reducing expenses. I wrote down the maximum amount I was allowing me to spend per month and then looked where I can cut expenses. Once I knew the limit, I could figure out how to achieve it. And that often was easier than I thought in the beginning.

If you are not used or skilled in budgeting, and, if you haven’t done this well till today, that may be the reason for it, no reason to worry. There is no need to become a specialist in something rather peripheral. Ask someone for help or you just focus on the following areas where savings are relatively easy: car, phone, taxes, and clothing.

The beginning of working towards financial protection might be difficult since often old routines need to be changed. But after a while things will get easier, especially when you think about the overall reason.

Since I had put the needed amount aside I felt protected. Now I had time to recover or a position of strength to negotiate with my current or a potential new employer if needed. In my current life it helps to negotiate with clients of my own business or to arrange my yoga classes and lifestyle workshops. Being financially protected takes away a lot of negative thoughts and worries and let me focus more on creating and enjoying my life.

The way I have invested the saved amount is determined by its function. It must be safe and available on short term. Yes, low risk means low interest rates, but primary target is to be protected. I have invested the amount in very conservative vehicles with low risks such as call money and short-term deposit accounts. And, very important, I will never touch this money except in a finncial crisis!

Are you financially protected? I hope you have taken good care of yourself since you deserve it.

A common response to my blog is that people would like to do a change in their life’s as well but feel limited by financial conditions. In a series of 3 or 4 posts I’d like to address this topic as basis for more thoughts or further discussion.

Growing up in a family with rather simply background – my father an accountant but long time unemployed, my mom a medical assistant and single mom with 2 kids after my parent’s divorce – can be a helpful experience. Not that I was missing anything necessary, my parents took excellent care of me. But since the financial situation was not overwhelming, I had the chance to learn to be content and happy with less. And I could learn to stay detached from extensive desires, since many things were just not affordable.

Beside that, I soon developed a talent and interest in math and finances. I played with games including calculations and benefited in school by being faster in doing calculations in my head then others with pocket calculator. Even today I love and use math, for example to create Excel spread sheets and graphs, and to analyse information and trends.

My mother taught me to spend only the money which I have – most countries nowadays have a slightly different concept, with all the known troubles following. Since student times I used to write down my expenses in a spread sheet and to analyze what I’m spending my money for, what I could afford and where I might be able to save some money if needed. I have continued to do it whenever I entered a new life situation, e.g. after I moved to Malaysia.

The experience to forego and stay content when seeing what other people could afford, might have been difficult, but turned out to be a blessing. My whole life I could control my desire to spend money unnecessarily, even when it was available, and save it for worse times or my dreams. For example, when all my study mates bought a BMW from their first salaries, I bought a foldable bicycle and a discount card for trips with the German railway and choose an alternative logistic concept. I enjoyed what I did and in this case it also fitted better to my conviction regarding living in harmony with nature and protecting the environment.

Also as expat in Shanghai I could enjoy my life AND control my expenses. I used my housing budget to only 50% and could pay my daily expenses with the other half. The entire salary went to my savings. And as said I still enjoyed my life – maybe since I learned early how to enjoy life without spending a fortune. I didn’t have an iPhone or another fancy phone, didn’t do excessive shopping of branded cloth, etc., till I had organized my finances. But I was traveling, had good food, enjoyed parties, did hobbies, and had some time for activities with friends as far as time was available at that time of my life. The key issue for deciding to live a different lifestyle was not the amount of money available to spend, as you could read in another post.

Since I moved to Asia, Yoga and studies of Asian philosophies helped me to maintain an attitude of contentment for simple things in times even when more was possible. Also the concept of karma or giving preferred to receiving grew stronger in my life.

And all this has paid off!

Lucky or successful with my investments, supported by a good financial advisor and by well invested time in understanding a bit more of the financial market, I could realize the financial foundation for my current life. Not within a week or month but by having an idea, a concept and the discipline to execute it over a number of years. While others often feel ‘forced’ to work for paying off their loans for a house or study, I could ‘retire’ and start a life with perceived financial freedom.

More about my concepts and philosophy of savings, easy to adapt for everyone, you can read in My way to financial protection and more posts in the category “Finances” to come.

How is my life now and how do I continue to attract what I’d like to live. If you haven’t read part I, please click here.

I arrived in Kuala Lumpur and had a white sheet as agenda for the coming weeks and months, in contrary to my busy corporate life with endless appointments. I have had my desired life in my mind, I have set the foundation by freeing my life from corporate obligations and I had moved to a destination of my choice. Let’s live! And be aware of all the signals I will receive. In the following I have listed a number of examples of signals I received or inquiries which have been answered.

Work: In part I of this post you could read that part of my plans was to find something to fulfill my passion to share positive experiences happened in my life. Teaching yoga seems to be the first to share. But how did it come to me? And were there any obstacles? The following short stories will explain that knowing what to want is not enough, but we need to be active and do the first step. And it shows that where one door is closing another will open as long you think positive.

When I was walking through Bangsar, I coincidently found a yoga studio and entered it more curiously than with any plans. I inquired if they have interesting classes for me. After I told the owner that I also teach yoga, she offered my replacement classes for her main teacher. And a few weeks later the same main teacher offered me to teach classes in his new yoga studio. I found not only my first teacher job in KL but also a place with wonderful students and a more yogic and less commercial atmosphere. Thanks!

At the same time I got to know that there is a yoga group in my condo. I joined the class once or twice and became friends with the teacher. Little later the teacher informed me in advance that she got the chance to move to Shanghai. It gave me some time to think if I want to continue the class and to work out a concept how to do. A trial class, announced by the leaving teacher, was the start of building a nice community of yoga students at my condo. I enjoy every single class and to see how each student and me as teacher are developing over the month and years they are practicing with me. Two times I did the first step and the universe responded. Thanks!

Another step in my becoming of a yoga teacher is related to a class I gave in a fitness center. The students enjoyed it – as far as I received a feedback – and I enjoyed the classes too, even the atmosphere in the fitness center was not very “yogic”. One day I only incidentally found out that the management had decided to replace me by another teacher, without any information to me. Should I be upset, or disappointed? I knew what I want and tried to see the positive side of this change. And the next day the universe responded by another studio offering me new classes. And it turned out that the management and I understand each other much better, and despite having the pressure to be commercial the studio management is able to maintain a quite yogic atmosphere. Also more students joined my classes and promise to be a good foundation for my new nutrition workshop and future yoga retreats. Thanks!

Family: was another topic highly rated in my dreams. I found wonderful people and was connected to women on different levels. They all gave me something but still I didn’t feel that is what I was dreaming of. Since I wanted to have kids and on the other side an independent woman with some life experience, suddenly age seem to become important within the “profile of the ideal woman”. I thought I know what I want but universe sent me another signal. This story is the most beautiful one explaining that being open minded for what happens around you is the key for fulfilling your dreams!

Playing badminton for the first time, I met a wonderful girl, who took care of me in this unfamiliar area of a badminton court with a shuttle flying around my head. We got to know each other better and better and I could see that she is quite similar to my person and we shared a lot of common interests and ideas. One day I asked her why she is driving such a big car and I learned that she has three kids. I met the kids shortly after that day and have to say that they easily won my heart. I started to think. I always thought that having kids means to make my own kids. On the other side being in the mid 40ies would include that I won’t be the youngest father for my kids. I was inquiring to the universe for guidance. And week by week it became more obvious and clear for me that I was offered a unique chance to make my dreams regarding a family real. We spent more and more time with other and it was filling my heart with joy how we grew together, her and me, the kids and me. And I started to get an idea how it will feel to have a family. And I loved this feeling! After being clear about what I want and being happy with the offered chance, it has been just a matter of action to take this present in front of me. She accepted my proposal a few days ago and soon we will get married and become officially a family! Thanks a lot!

Conclusion: These are just two examples how being mindful and being clear what someone wants in his or her life will start a process resulting in an abundance of information and opportunities offered. Thinking positive will bring positive things into our life. And when things not seem to turn out as thought, often other opportunities, maybe even better, are showing up unexpectedly as long we think positive. It also shows that we need to be active to attract opportunities in our life, not sitting passively at home. Last but not least, chances offered are not always exactly as we imagined them. They might be different than we thought, however fulfilling the basics of our desires and maybe offer an even better opportunity. It’s up to us to keep our mind open and senses alert to realize and take the chances. Inquiring to the higher power has become a daily part of my life and almost every day I receive replies which help me to make my life. Life has become so beautiful knowing that almost everything is possible with positive thoughts.

My next inquiries? On the long term side I have:

  • Become a better yoga teacher, helping people to improve their life, physically and mentally. Extending my sharing to an holistic approach including diet and nutrition and
  • Marrying my wonderful fiancé and living an enjoyable and inspiring family life. Raising the kids and prepare them for their life.
  • Publishing a book “A different life” in Germany/Europe based on this blog and the feedback of the readers what is inspiring and helpful for them.
  • Doing a one-year around the world trip with my wife, once the kids are independent and have started their own life.

Curious about the result? Well, me too. However, I’m confident that it will happen one way or the other.

What are your dreams? What thoughts became real in your life? As always, please feel free to leave a comment.

Have a wonderful day and life 🙂

Volker

A few days ago I had the chance to speak with a neighbour about healthy food. She is suffering from some symptoms since a few weeks which include the respiratory system and the skin. Drugs helped for a moment but the symptoms are coming back after a while. After she consulted a TCM doctor she starts to feel better. I told her on long term only changes in diet and elimination of the source for her diseases will provide lasting well-being to her.

I believed and trusted doctors and school medicine as well – and was sick twice a year for many years. Fortunately I had the chance to live in Asia and learn more about traditional medicines, such as Ayurveda, the knowledge of life from India, or traditional Chinese medicine. The same time I understood more about how the system works. Some conclusions from my perspective:

The school medicine as it is taught in universities and the pharmaceutical industry will not help you to gain a lasting well-being. The industry is first of all interested to sell their products and to make profit. The doctors, if profit oriented, like “to see you again”, or if more committed to the hippocratic oath, might not know better how to help you. There are taught how to treat symptoms. The topic of nutrition is not part of a standard curriculum at a university, which isn’t a surprise if you see who is sponsoring and supporting research at universities. So called alternative medicines focus on finding the symptoms of a disease and to eliminate them. They are observing nature and try to connect you back with nature.

The food industry has the same driving force as the pharmaceutical industry: profit. In order to increase profit, they are interested in designing the food – or shall we say ‘products’? – appealing enough, that the consumer want to buy it. Furthermore they design products which have a long shelve life, to support long shipping ways and long storage time in warehouses and shelves in the supermarket. Last but not least they design production methods which support mass production and reducing costs. All this together leads to the fact, that the products are not at all good for your health, even if well designed advertising tries to convince you of the opposite.
Some examples requested? Diet drinks with lots of Aspartame, energy bars, yoghurt drinks and others with lots of refined sugar, fat free meals full with MSG (ajinomoto) and higher contents of refined salt, processed meat as source of protein, etc. Do you know that a naturally raised chicken, living free and grass fed, needs 90 days to reach the volume and weight to be slaughtered, whereas a conventionally raised chicken is “ready” in 35 to 40 days. How? The chicken’s food is ‘enriched’ with antibiotics, hormones, unnatural food including corn, food additives and more. You really think this is ‘a healthy source for proteins’. Do you want to eat that drug cocktail called ‘chicken’?
‘But all this food is permitted by authorities like the FDA in the U.S.’ Yes. And do you know who is sitting in the FDA? You will find among others former top manager of the food industry… Any further questions?

Nature is a fantastic system, which is providing everything human beings need for life. Nature provides the best food for human beings, natural unprocessed food, fresh food, food full of nutrients, tasty food.
Reconnecting with nature also includes connecting with seasons and with food provided. Ayurveda and TCM classify nature with qualities like fire, water, earth or yin (cold) and yang (hot). The same applies for humans and food. Hence it makes sense if a person with more fire qualities eats more cooling food. Also it makes sense to eat warming food during cold seasons and cooling food during hot seasons. Nature is taking care of this by providing the right food depending on seasons or climates. That’s why we find lots of berries during in summer in Europe and cabbage in winter. Other examples are cooling fruits like water melons and coconut in hot regions. Makes sense right? Or do you heat your house during summer and cool it down during winter?

So, how to get healthy or maintain health, if not with drugs?
‘You are what you eat’. Hence be more aware of what you eat and where the food is coming from. The best and healthiest food is natural, and could grow in your garden, comes from a local resource, follows the season, is fresh and is unprocessed as possible. With a healthy diet, your immune system will be strong and able to maintain your health and to prevent any chronic diseases.

I changed my diet over the time according to these principles, eating mostly raw food – green smoothgies, salads, etc, – , with organic and local ingredients if available. As a result my health has been increased significantly. The only ‘medicine’ I have at home is Vitamin C. Beside this I study more about Aryuveda including listen to my body to further optimize and my diet.

What about you? Are you what you eat? And are you what you want to be?
Often I hear the feedback: ‘Yes, I know, but all this cravings for unhealthy food…’. No big problem, I’ll write about that in my next diet and nutrition post soon.

Have a great day 🙂
